Unlocked
Hourglass Unlocked Ambient Lighting Edit Palette ($80.00 for 0.24 oz.) is a new, limited edition holiday palette that features two Ambient Lighting Powders, one Ambient Lighting Bronzer, two Ambient Lighting Blushes, and one Metallic Strobe Lighting Powder. The upside to this year’s palette (in a way) is that the included shades are new rather than repeated from the permanent range. The palette contains $10.51 worth of Ambient Lighting Powder, $5.13 worth of Ambient Lighting Bronzer, $20.27 worth of Ambient Lighting Blush, and $9.50 worth of Metallic Strobe Lighting Powder for a total value of $45.41. I’m not sure why the Hourglass Ambient Lighting palettes are priced so much over the “value” in the palette (as usually palettes offer more value than purchasing alone).
I’d actually love to see Hourglass bring back trios for the holidays–maybe two or three (at least one for lighter skin, one for deeper skin) rather than attempting a one-size-fits-few kind of palette. I am not fair (I’d classify myself as light-medium) but found that the second Ambient Lighting Powder darkened my complexion noticeably if used all-over, so it was more suitable as a bronzer on me, so I found that it was a palette that seemed most suitable for medium to medium deep skin tones.

Soft Light
Soft Light is a light beige with warm, golden undertones and a soft matte finish–there was a dusting of pearl that gave it a lift but not enough to make it read shimmery on my skin. In the swatch, I’ve packed it on in the left portion to try and show the powder’s color as it does diffuse well into my actual skin tone (my arm being light to light-medium) as it was sheer (as intended!). Dusted all-over my face, the powder softened the appearance of pores and skin texture to give a soft matte finish that didn’t look dry or flat. It seemed to add a smidgen of overall warmth as well. I like using powders like this as they’re intended–finishing powders–to add back some luminosity after setting with a more matte powder or on days when I’m indoors and don’t need a full-on setting powder for longevity. It didn’t inhibit the wear of my base products and did seem to help prevent shine coming through for an extra hour or so.

Formula Overview
$48.00/0.35 oz. — $137.14 Per Ounce
The Ambient Lighting Powders breathe life back into the skin after you’ve applied foundations and setting powders–especially if you have more mattifying base products on. They’re not full-on highlighters, but they’re not exactly setting powders (by Hourglass’ definition, they are finishing powders).
If you have very oily skin, you may still need your usual setting powder, but for my normal-to-dry skin, the Ambient Lighting Powders work as a setting and finishing powder in one for me. I get extended wear out of my base products, but the powders also smooths the skin’s appearance, minimizes pores and imperfections, and gives the skin a natural luminosity (not shiny, not shimmery). It is that something extra that someone won’t see and go, “Oh, nice lipstick!” but “Did you do something different with your skin?” When people start asking you about your skincare routine, that’s when you know a product is really delivering on its promises!
The only negative I have to say about the products is that the texture is very, very soft, so depending on the brush you use, excess powder can be kicked up (and wasted).

Golden Bronze Light
Golden Bronze Light is a medium brown with warm undertones and a golden sheen. It was richly pigmented with a smooth, silky texture that wasn’t too soft nor too firm in the pan, so it was blendable and easy to work with on my skin. The bronzer applied evenly to bare skin and yielded a soft, natural finish. It stayed on well for eight and a half hours on me before fading noticeably. (The downside is that the formula is supposed to be buildable, and this shade was quite pigmented.)

Formula Overview
$52.00/0.39 oz. — $133.33 Per Ounce
The Ambient Lighting Bronzer formula is supposed have a “sheer, airy” feel (sheer as in texture) that give a “natural, sun-kissed glow” with the “illuminating effects of Ambient Lighting Powder” with “bronze pigments” that give it “buildable color.” The formula tends to be more pigmented (usually semi-opaque), but the textures are always soft enough that a less dense brush or lighter hand is an option for picking up less product and getting less coverage. I find that the bronzer formula tends to be less powdery compared to the original Ambient Lighting Powders, which is nice. The wear is typically around eight hours on me.

Nude Glow
Nude Glow is a light-medium, pinky-peach with warm undertones and flecks of gold micro-sparkle. The blush was rather pigmented when it was supposed to be buildable… which is doable with a light touch or a less-dense brush; that technique often works with most pigmented products, though. The blush had a soft, slightly dusty texture in the pan, but it was smooth and blendable on my cheeks. It yielded a golden sheen that was more apparent than I expected. This shade wore well for eight hours on me before it started to fade noticeably.

Formula Overview
$40.00/0.15 oz. — $266.67 Per Ounce
The formula is supposed to have “depth and dimension” unlike traditional blush, be “lightweight and airy,” and have the “perfect balance of pigment and powder.” Hourglass says it uses “an advanced ‘miscelare’ technique,” which means to mix in Italian (per Sephora) and is how the marbled effect is achieved. The blush is also supposed to have “buildable color.” It does bring to mind the concept of a lot of baked formulas on the market, but I think the texture is softer and more finely-milled than most.
The texture is very soft and delicate; it feels exactly like the Ambient Lighting Powders. In an all-over powder, I don’t mind what can sometimes veer on powderiness, but in a blush, it can be easy to overload color onto the blush and then onto the skin. I wish it was slightly firmer or less powdery, which would minimize waste and make it more foolproof to apply.

Filtered Light
Filtered Light is a soft, light brown with warm, yellow undertones and a satin sheen. It had medium coverage–far more than anticipated given it’s part of the Ambient Lighting Powder range–which resulted in a more noticeable deepening on my skin tone when I used this all-over. The powder would be more suitable for medium and deeper complexions for all-over application but would work to add warmth on lighter skin tones like a subtle bronzer. It had a smooth, silky consistency that was a smidgen powdery in the pan, but it did not appear dry or dusty applied to my skin. It did smooth out my skin’s texture and give me a more “poreless” appearance. As a finishing powder, it did not disrupt the longevity of my base, and I’d say it did extend the wear by an hour or so.

Mood Flush
Mood Flush is a medium pink with warm undertones and a natural finish. It had semi-opaque, buildable pigmentation with a soft, silky consistency that was slightly powdery in the pan, but it was so finely-milled that it sat on my skin well and did not look dry or dusty. The blush applied evenly, blended out easily along the edges, and stayed on well for eight hours.

Champagne Strobe Light
Champagne Strobe Light is a light-medium gold with warm, yellow undertones and a metallic sheen. It had medium coverage in a single layer with a moderate shine that was smooth and reflective without emphasizing my skin’s natural texture. The powder was soft, silky, and blendable without being too dusty in the pan. It wore well for eight hours on me before fading a bit.

Formula Overview
—
The brand described the formula as «formulated with intensely concentrated, multifaceted pearl particles» to give «the most reflective glow.» It’s supposed to have a «velvety texture.» These seem to be an intensified version of the brand’s Ambient Strobe Lighting Powders, but this formula is not presently available individually. The Metallic variation has a lot more pearl and is aptly described as «metallic.»
The powders had a soft, lightly dusty texture in the pan, but they blended out nicely on the skin and were definitely high-shine, intense highlighters on the skin (both dry and damp). They were fairly pigmented with coverage ranging from medium, buildable to full depending on the shade and whether it was used dry or damp with damp application always yielded more coverage and a shinier finish. The highlighters wore well for seven and a half to eight hours on me.
